YOUNG COMMUNICATORS REPRESENT ICCS CONVENTION ON MEDIA COMMUNICATION

The University of Saint Anthony sent eight delegates from the circle of Young Communicators to be the official representatives in the 4th ICCS Convention on Media Communication at University of Northerastern Philippines last November 27, 2010.

They are: Marlon Pontillas, AB Communication; Shiela Marie Balbuena, AB Communication; Reinaline Lanuzo, AB Communication; Liezel Zamudio, AB Communication; Honey Rose Camila, AB Political Science; Noenah Salvador; BSED; Diorinda Calibara, BSED; and Jovie kate Ramboyong; BS Commerce.

This is the first regional seminar conducted by the ICCS.

International Center for Communication Studies or ICCS is the fastest growing training center for future practitioners of the communication profession. It aims to provide a venue for the advancement and essential evaluation of communication practices in the field of journalism, psychology, PR etc. Also, it is a member of the Council of Affiliates of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in South Carolina, USA and an institutional member of the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP).

The fourth year of the convention bannered the theme: “Media Practice: Different Fields; Different Challenges.” The talk was divided into five sessions rendered by the most promising media practitioners in the country, both in radio and television.

The program started at 9:30 A.M. and hosted by Mr. Alex Baltazar. The first talk was all about “Lecture on News Writing” by Ms. Sol Aragones, an ABS-CBN field reporter. Ms. Aragones highlighted the steps on writing news in television and the critical parts in covering news. Before the talk ends, a game was conducted by Ms. Aragones to the students. The game was an Impromptu Broadcasting and Marlon Pontillas, third year Communication Student was placed second.

The next talk was followed by Mr. Mark Salazar, GMA7 field reporter stressing the “Media Ethics in the Philippines”. The presentation was based in part on the GMA7 News and Public Affairs and Editorial Manual. He emphasized that Journalists are expected to provide news that is factual, unbiased, and devoid of any motive other than the pursuit of truth.

On the afternoon session, Ms. Cecille Lardizabal of Reuters Television/Inquirer Radio tackled the “Current Issues and Trends in Radio Broadcasting”. Ms. Lardizabal pointed out the purpose of radio in human’s life and how to make magic to the listeners if you want to be inclined in Radio Broadcasting.

The fourth speaker was introduced by Mrs. Remelita Fraginal, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (USANT). The speaker was a field reporter in GMA7 and discussed about Documentary Making. She is none other than Ms. Maki Pulido. Ms. Maki overemphasized that during a shoot, moral obligation must be instilled to a media practitioner. Documentary Making takes a lot of process yet fulfilling when it is successfully done.

Lecture on Covering Dangerous Stories was humorously delivered by Ms. Susan Enriquez, GMA7 field reporter to the delegates. Ms. Enriquez shared her creepy experiences in the field. Yet, she was so thankful that she surpassed the catastrophe that she encountered.

The seminar was successfully held because of the substantial information gained by the students to the speakers. At the end of the talk, professors and students were given the chance to raise their points to the speakers.

OPPORTUNITY COST
by: Iskulmeyt_ARL’c”,)

The term “opportunity cost” is commonly seen or heard in Economics class. In Economics, opportunity cost is giving up something for the betterment of something else. In our everyday life, we usually practice this concept. How? Say for example, when we had our examination, of course… we will not dedicate ourselves studying in one subject only. We will divide our time so we can finish reviewing all our subjects. In this article, I’ll share to you my personal experience on making a crucial decision applying “opportunity cost”.
After the final examination in my former school, I’m thinking on what will I do for summer. Shall I stay at home devoting my self surfing the net all day long? Or shall I relax and find some leisure activities anyway its vacation? I made up my mind and finally decided to search for a summer job. I immediately opened my laptop and started to create a résumé. After a week, I passed my résumé to Jollibee Naga hoping to be hired so quickly. I got bored due to the series of interrogation process to applicants. Imagine? Three interviews plus one examination-whoa!
On my way to boarding house, my friend informed me that Sutherland Global Services is looking for call center agents. Even if I had this doubt if I’ll be in or not, I still tried my luck. Luckily, I was hired. On the next day, the manager of Jollibee informed me through a text message that I’m hired also. I made up my mind and finally decided to go with Sutherland. I underwent first a three week Language Training.
Really, I enjoyed a lot because of the learning that I acquired during the training and of course, the new circle of friends. I was exposed to the reality of life and that’s a major fulfillment in my self. Being the youngest in the wave, I was pampered by my colleagues. All of us passed the Language Training and we all proceed to the Product Specifics Training (PST).
PST tackles serious matters on our account that we will handle. Our training starts from 11 pm and end at 7 am. Really, I have to swap my daily routine- wake up at night and sleep at day time. It’s a big adjustment that I made but I cannot do anything but to push my self to this. On our one week training, I feel so frail physically and mentally. My legs tend to chill when I am starving, my throat is always dry that’s why I need to drink a lot o f water, a colony of ants in the bowl of toilet, and sudden loss of weight. I confessed to my mom about this and she predicted that I might be diabetic. “No! No! No! That cannot happen and must no happen”, I cried to my self. On the next day, we went to my grandma’s house to check my blood sugar. We were all shocked when we found out that my blood sugar reaches as high as 250. My mom and my grandma decided that I will never pursue anymore the work that I had. I can’t do anything but to follow-anyway, they are right.
I called my trainer and talked to her about my concern. She feels so sorry because of what happened. I had my medication to my doctor and he discussed about my lifetime disease. I came up with one very important decision in my career. I gave up Sutherland and my former school and transferred here in USANT. I know everything has a purpose why every single thing happened.
Now at my early age, I’m limited to sweets and foods rich in carbohydrates. Most of the times, I crave a lot but I need to control and discipline my self. To be honest, I don’t have any regrets on my decision. Now, I’m here in USANT, my lifestyle is everything in control- foods that I need to take and other do’s and don’ts.
Every time I inject my insulin, I find my self dependent and pathetic. But this is what God wants and I know, I can surpass this catastrophe. I will fight for my life ‘til I can, I will not lose hope ‘til I can because this is life, you need to be strong for you to survive.
“I gave up my career because I need to take care of my lifestyle…”

SA LANG NAKILALA (new version)

Isip ko`y litong lito
sa net ay ika`y inibig ko
kahit di pa kita nakikita
puso ko`y bihag mo
Sa sandaling ka chat kita
anong saya aking nadarama
dalangin ko na sana`y online ka
upang ika`y makasama

chorus

di man kita nakakausap ng malapitan at makasama

chorus

Kahit sa letrato lang kita nakita
at sa chat lang kita nakilala
sa sandaling kasama ka
puso ko ay maligaya
at nang ikaw ay lumisan aking sinta
puso ko`y lumuluhat nagdurusa
sana naman ay bumalik ka
pagkakaingatan ko na

JOINING TO ROOMS

Rooms in camfrog are categorized into two: (a) General rooms, (b) 18+ rooms and (c) Deaf rooms. General rooms are an all age rooms wherein anyone can join even if the user is minor. On the other hand, 18+ rooms are strictly prohibited to the minor users. Only users whose age is 18 above can join to the room. Deaf rooms are suitable for the deaf users wherein they communicate cam to cam by using sign languages.

GENERAL ROOM

This is a room wherein anyone can join. Commonly, the rooms under this category set a lot of rules and regulations that the users must observed and followed. The big rule on this room is “No nudity allowed”. Meaning, users must observe a proper dress code while on cam. Wankers are kicked by operators and or owners or sometimes, they are been banned in the room. The famous general room is the “Pinoycamfrog”. Filipino users are the majority users who logged in the room. There are also users from the other country who become regular users inside the room. This room consists of 24 rules that the users must follow. Common rules are (a) respect of users to other users, (b) proper use of fonts (c) no shows allowed, (d) proper use of microphone, (e) language to be used, etc. The operators will give you a warning if you violate one of them and if you still do the same, you will be punished in the room. Majority of the rooms in the general rooms always set a topic to be discussed (e.g. love, personal life, and problems) in the room to establish companionship and good flow of communication. Some rooms set a grand eyeball in a particular date so that users can see each other personally and to build a more strong camaraderie.

18+ ROOMS

Only users whose age is 18 above can joined in this room. This is a more intense room because majority of the rooms don’t set a strict rules compare to the general rooms. All stuffs are allowed and nudity is much more appreciated. This is a cyber sex room where you can see a DJ hosting and plays soft songs to arouse the users. Commonly, the DJ decided if who will be the “rose of the morning/afternoon/evening”. He or she will entertain the users by dancing on the on going music. If the majority of the users are already craving to him/her, he/she will start to put off his/her shirt and start to create his/her show inside the room. However, not all rooms in 18+ have the same routine. Other rooms are also like general rooms that have strict rules and no wanking allowed. It’s just that, they put their rooms in 18+ to avoid minor users.

DEAF ROOMS

Handicapped users can also join to camfrog especially to the deaf persons. Deaf rooms are designed to them so that they can also converse to the users who have the same case. Usually, they don’t type nor host like the other two rooms. They communicate interpersonally. They use sign languages so that the other user can understand him better. That way of communicating creates a harmonious relationship to them that they also create friendship like the other rooms.

CLASSIFICATION OF USERS

Users can be classified into six categories: users, regular users, operators, operators plus, co-owners, and main owners. Indicators of these are colors which can be seen on the list of users upon joining the room.

USERS

They are the ones who have just joined the room. Normally, they are the first timers and not yet known the rules and regulations so well. They just observe and feel the room’s atmosphere to avoid out of place. They are the ones who are commonly welcomed by the operators and been interviewed by the other users. Black is their color indicator.

REGULAR USERS

This kind of user is the one who frequently stayed inside the room. They are not a first timer anymore and know the rules and regulations well. They actively participated during room topic discussions and activities. Blue is their color indicator.

OPERATORS

Owners and co-owners are the ones who granted operator to the user. They are the users who have seen a potential to maintain orderliness and peace inside the room. This kind of user greets users who have just come in. They are allowed to warn users who violate rules and kick users who continue to do so. They need to download Kermit and Ice Op Download to warn and kick users entailing their violations. Green is their color indicator.

OPERATORS PLUS

This user is the granted operators who have seen a great potential to organize the room. Their power in the room is not just to warn and kick users. They are allowed to ban the user for corresponding days (depending on the violation). Still, green is their color indicator.

CO-OWNERS

This is a higher position of a user. This kind of user has shown his excellence in systematizing the room. Normally, he is a maintaining officer. He doesn’t anymore greet, kick, and ban users (It’s the responsibility of operators). He is allowed to give colors to the users who deserve. Also, he is allowed to demote operators who are violating their powers.

OWNERS

They are the users who owned the room. He bought the room and pays the room for a corresponding value. Normally, it’s a monthly basis and through credit card. He set the dos and don’ts of the room.

Making it to the President's List

I remember during the start of the semester. During the preliminary period, I am starting to compute my estimated QPI (Quality Point Index).

It just ranged from 3.30-3.45. I am assuming that one of my subject has a C+ letter grade or grade between (81-85). Still, I strive hard and do my best during examinations and projects. At the end of the semester, I feel so frustrated when I heard that our philosophy instructor is giving a line of 7 grade and most of the times, "Incomplete mark". On the second day of enrollment, I received my grades from the registrar and there is no letter grade lower than B. I immediately went to my philo instructor because that's the only subject that I have no grade. He opened his record and showed it to me. My grade is 82 (C+). I asked him why? And I found out that my class standing is only 70%. He said that I lack 3 journal notes. I complained because I completed my journal notes so, he changed my grade. Now, my grade turns to a letter grade of B. My grade is now complete and for the first time, I made it to the president's list (university honors).
